Performance indicators

The Audit Commission has a number of important roles in performance information.

National Performance Indicators

We collect, validate and publish statutory performance information specified by the Government on council services in England and Wales. This is published online and in publications and is available from 1993/94. (Until recently it was the Audit Commission that specified statutory indicators).

In the area of health, the Audit Commission is working with the Commission for Health Improvement (CHI) and others to develop national and local commentaries on the performance of the NHS, and to improve the quality of the performance indicators available.

Local Performance Indicators

Authorities are encouraged to develop and use local performance indicators.

We publish guides for authorities on setting and monitoring indicators - available online and in publications.

An online library of definitions of local performance indicators (external link) developed jointly with the Improvement and Development Agency (IDeA) (and in collaboration with Syniad in Wales) is available.

Quality of Life Indicators

These voluntary indicators for local authorities cover areas of economic, social and environmental well being. Around 90 authorities are piloting the indicators during 2001/02. Please refer to the guidance under specific subject areas for more information.

Value-for-Money Indicators

We identify key value-for-money (VFM) indicators based on the recommendations from selected national studies and associated audits. These VFM indicators are then used to see what changes have taken place since the original study or audit, and the findings are published.
