Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service - Understanding the community helps improve fire safety

Released  31 August 2008

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service uses its knowledge of local communities to target those at highest risk and to connect with new communities. It is a partner in Migrant Workers North West, an organisation providing advice and support. A Polish-speaking community safety worker provides community fire safety messages for inclusion in welcome packs for new residents. Fire stations are used to run English as a second language courses. Using female volunteers, the Service is increasing home fire risk assessments in homes in the Asian community. These approaches are helping to break down barriers and increase the take-up of fire safety messages. Lancashire’s work means people are less vulnerable and better able to protect themselves from fire.
