Westminster PCT - Assessing and reducing impact on the environment - KLOE 2.3

The PCT is aiming to assess its impact on the environment, implement a strategy to minimise this effect and ensure that all future investments are sustainable investments. The PCT, along with two other local PCTs, have established a joint working group, the Environment Group, to review key performance indicators and targets for reducing the use of energy, minimising the production of waste and optimising green travel.

The Environment Group also oversees the implementation of the Carbon Trust Report recommendations and has developed initiatives to promote energy conservation and energy training.

Recent commitment to the objective has been practically demonstrated in a number of areas:

  • Utilisation of building management systems to control and monitor heating and hot water systems within its facilities
  • Introduction of low energy lamps and lighting control systems
  • A small fleet of vehicles is used across the three PCTs to deliver community transport services, including post and pharmacy deliveries and non-emergency transport. These vehicles are liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) powered and produce no carbon emissions
  • Promotion of alternative means of transport and identification of healthy travel options for staff including cycling and walking

The Environment Group is currently developing a Sustainability Protocol which will set out how the PCT will tackle sustainability in partnership with the PCT's wider community including local businesses, partners and residents.

The PCT are achieving a reduction in their carbon footprint internally and are developing arrangements with the community to share good practice

The PCT are working in partnership with two local PCTs who are facing similar challenges and are working towards involving further partners and the wider community to tackle environmental issues across the North West London region
