Inspections under CAA

What we did

We introduced Comprehensive Area Assessment (CAA) in April 2009 and consulted on a revised inspection framework in January 2010. We carried out a small number of inspections in 2010 using the new framework. We stopped carrying out CAA assessments in May 2010.

How we did it

The Audit Commission's approach to inspection: Consultation document (PDF) published in January 2010 set out some changes to our approach to inspection to reflect our CAA framework. We designed the new approach to be even more risk-based, proportionate, results-focused and flexible. We planned to fully tailor our inspections to local priorities, whether delivered by councils alone or in partnership with others.

The Audit Commission's approach to inspection: draft framework (PDF) also published in January 2010 provided more details of the revised approach.

We published a revised review procedure for inspections (PDF) in May 2010.

Inspection results

The inspection reports for councils published between 2000 and 2011 are in date order starting with the most recent.

Our inspection spreadsheet (XLS, 757kb) enables you to search for reports by council, inspection category or date.

What we learnt

We implemented the revised approach to inspection in only a small number of organisations, so we did not carry out or commission a formal evaluation.
