Barrow-in-Furness Borough Council - benefits service

Released  26 February 2009
Rating: Poor service | Poor prospects for improvement

Summary [Download full report below this summary]

The benefits service at Barrow-in-Furness is poor with poor prospects for improvement. The Borough suffers from high levels of deprivation and worklessness. The Council's focus on regeneration has been to reduce the number of people in the area claiming benefits, at the same time not ensuring that those entitled to benefits receive it in a timely manner. The contract to deliver the service has resulted in the creation of new jobs to the area but this is clouding some key performance issues in the Service and is a barrier to future improvement.
