About local government

Our work extends across the range of local government service areas including benefits, children and young people, community safety (including police, probation and fire), culture, environment, housing, regeneration and sustainable development.

  • We inspect the quality and cost effectiveness of local services and report back to the public on the results to help local authorities to continually improve.
  • We work in partnership to assess the local public services in an area and promote a better quality of life for local people.

Our work is supported by our research and learning and the Commission’s national studies programme.
