Across England, local services are monitored by separate watchdogs – the Audit Commission, Care Quality Commission, Her Majesty's Inspectorates of Constabulary, Prisons and Probation, and Ofsted.
Comprehensive Area Assessment (CAA) brought the work of these watchdogs together.
In May 2010 the new government announced that they would abolish CAA. To avoid confusion on when they should end, we - and the other inspectorates - ceased all work on the joint assessments immediately.

This website is still available and provides you with information on how the local services in your area perform. The site covers some of the areas of most concern locally - such as:
- local economy strength
- housing
- children’s well-being
- crime and safety
- care and health
- provisions for vulnerable people
- the quality of the environment

CAA replaced Comprehensive Performance Assessment (CPA), which ran from 2002 until 2008 and only assessed councils.
