Torbay Borough Council, local doctors and the primary care trust are developing a project that links sport, physical activity and healthcare. The existing leisure centre site will be used to provide a new regional gymnastics facility, obesity gym, specialist sports injury clinic, new changing facilities and integrated care facilities.
This project was borne out of a joint public service agreement between the Department of Health, DCMS, Torbay Council and the PCT in 2004 aimed at improving the health of people suffering from obesity and associated conditions.
The new development will provide a new multi-million pound investment by the PCT providing a major new Healthy Living Centre and over £1 million for new sporting facilities on the site adjacent to the leisure centre. There is now a long-term commitment by both partners to continue joint developments across Torbay.
