It is estimated that UK pension schemes pay around £200 million to deceased pensioners each year. Mortality screening identifies deceased pensioners to help you detect, prevent and recover these overpayments. Mortality screening is therefore an essential tool for pension schemes.

A flexible service

Previously NFI offered mortality screening every two years but we have now responded to demand for a more regular and flexible service. The NFI Mortality screening service now offers screening from as regular as monthly through to annual screening or just one off screening. This means there is a flexible and affordable solution for schemes of all sizes.

NFI offers matching to the Department for Works and Pensions (DWP) deceased records every six months and to the General Registrars Office (GRO) Disclosure of Death Registration Information (DDRI) on a monthly or ad hoc basis (see below for further information on these data sources). This allows you to take advantage of the uniqueness of both data sources. Data submission for DWP matching is by 29 November 2013 with matches being released in early January 2014, and by 27 June 2014 with matches being released by early August 2014.

A proven service

The NFI has been undertaking deceased matching since 1998 and it provides a service to both major public sector and blue chip company pension schemes. Pension schemes participating in NFI 2010/11 identified over 3,000 deceased pensioners amounting to fraud and overpayments in excess of £90 million.  NFI’s user friendly web-based application allows pensions schemes to easily and securely submit pensions data and then view matches in the same application.

A cost-effective service

Our fee scale is transparent and based on the number of pensioners in a scheme and the number of screening runs undertaken per annum, thus providing a flexible solution for pension schemes of all sizes. Subsequent screening runs are discounted to provide an opportunity for regular matching on a cost effective basis. For example a pension scheme with 10,000 pension records would pay £2,350 excl. VAT for its first mortality screening run, and then £1,750 for its second and third screening runs. The fees would then be further discounted for runs four to six (£1,325 per run) and runs seven to twelve (£900 per run).

Sources of deads data

The NFI uses the best sources of deceased person data to ensure that the matching is as accurate as possible:

  • Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) deceased data - the DWP hold details of the deaths of all UK Citizens, including some of those that have died overseas. This data also includes National Insurance numbers which improves the accuracy of the resulting matches.
  • Disclosure of Death Registration Information (DDRI) is a list of deaths provided by the General Register Office of England & Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
