Flexible mortaility screening

June 2013 DWP mortality screening – sign up now!

As part of NFI’s new mortality screening service, matching to DWP deceased records is now available every six months. The next data submission deadline is 28 June 2013 with matches being released in early August.

Please email nfiqueries@audit-commission.gsi.gov.uk or telephone 0303 444 8322 to sign up or discuss your requirements.

A flexible service

Previously NFI offered mortality screening every two years but we have now responded to demand for a more regular and flexible service. You will have already received deceased matches in February 2013 as part of NFI 12/13. We now offer a more flexible service to participants by offering mortality screening to Department for Works and Pensions (DWP) deceased records every six months and to General Registrars Office (GRO) Disclosure of Death Registration Information (DDRI) on a monthly or ad hoc basis (see below for further information on these data sources). This allows you to take advantage of the uniqueness of both data sources.

More frequent mortality screening can help your authority reduce fraud and overpayment by identifying deceased; pensioners, blue badge holders, concessionary pass holders and care home residents.

Data submission for DWP matching is by the 28 June 2013 with resulting matches being released around the 9 August 2013, and 29 November 2013 with resulting matches being released early in January 2014.

Sources of deads data

The NFI uses the best sources of deceased person data to ensure that the matching is as accurate as possible:

  • Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) deceased data - the DWP hold details of the deaths of all UK Citizens, including some of those that have died overseas. This data also includes National Insurance numbers which improves the accuracy of the resulting matches.
  • Disclosure of Death Registration Information (DDRI) is a list of deaths provided by the General Register Office of England & Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
