Road safety should be considered a key quality of life issue. Although Britain has a low level of death and injury compared to the rest of Europe, there are still many areas for improvement. This report is intended to help local agencies work more effectively to reduce the number of deaths and injuries on our roads.
Improving road safety will always be a priority but building on the success of the past will be difficult because it means persuading road users to behave more safely.
The report identified these key issues:
- local authorities need to work closely with the Highways Agency, police, NHS, and fire and rescue services
- to target at-risk users, as well as at-risk locations, and achieve value for money
- local public bodies should work together better, both informally and in established partnerships, based on the framework in this report
A framework was outlined for improving road safety, covering the following:
- analysing data better
- targeting action on locations and people
- engaging the public
- evaluating value for money
