Road safety

The suffering caused by traffic accidents means that road safety must always be a priority. Our national report, Changing lanes, says that to maintain progress in reducing road casualties, the emphasis should shift from making the roads safer, to making people use them more safely and sustainably. The report is intended to help local agencies work more effectively together to reduce the number of deaths and injuries on our roads. We have developed this site in order to make it easy for these different audiences to access the ideas from the report.

Accompanying Changing lanes:

In the left column are links to material tailored for specific audiences. They include case studies that are particularly relevant to them and improvement questions to help review how casualty reduction work is managed.

During the study we commissioned TRL Ltd to produce two supporting documents: Review of road safety good practice in English local authorities and Review of international road safety good practice. Although originally conceived as internal reports to inform the study, they have been made available here in the interests of transparency.

To discuss any specific issues of detail from the report or these web pages, contact the study team at road-safety@audit-commission.gov.uk.
