On Wednesday 17 May, the Audit Commission launched its report on Neighbourhood crime and anti-social behaviour. The report examines the extent to which local agencies have been successful in developing approaches to community safety, mobilising frontline staff and using information to solve local problems in ways which deliver value for money for local people. The report identifies achievements and best practice and suggest how agencies can work together, and with local people, to make neighbourhoods safer.

The report was launched at an event where Liam Byrne MP delivered the keynote speech. His speech highlights the government's commitment and agenda to responding to neighbourhood concerns, highlighting neighbourhood policing, police force restructuring, the proposed changes to modernise Crime and Disorder Partnerships through the Crime and Disorder Act review and Police and Justice Bill.

Zoë Billingham, Director of Community Safety and the environment at the Audit Commission presented the key findings of the report.

The event also provided an opportunity for guests to put questions to a panel of experts. The panel was facilitated by Shiulie Ghosh from ITN and consisted of Sir Michael Lyons, Acting Chairman, Audit Commission, Matt Baggott, Chief Constable, Leicestershire Constabulary, Alan Woods OBE, Chief Executive, ENCAMS and Sir Simon Milton, Leader of the Council, Westminster City Council.

The event was attended by those involved at both policy and practitioner level within the community safety sector, central and local government, the police and academia.

Following the launch of this report, we also held 3 further events in July. These events aimed to give practical guidance to local agencies to help them know and understand their wards and neighbourhoods, find out what concerns local people, analyse the problem, take action and communicate the results to residents.

The events were held in three locations on 13 July in Leeds, 25 July in Bristol and on 27 July in London.
