Local quality of life indicators - supporting local communities to become sustainable is a guide to local monitoring to complement the indicators in the UK Government Sustainable Development Strategy; containing and explaining the background behind the 45 indicators that measure the quality of life in individual localities and the effectiveness of local sustainable community strategies, which are also closely linked to national sustainable development indicators.

The measures have been identified by the Audit Commission, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM).

The areas covered are:

  • community cohesion and involvement
  • community safety
  • culture and leisure
  • economic well-being
  • education and life-long learning
  • environment
  • health and social well-being
  • housing
  • transport and access
  • other indicators

Area profiles is a pioneering Audit Commission pilot project to test the feasibility of bringing together all the data, information and assessments about local quality of life and services. The profiles produced by each seven components are then used in the final process of bringing it all together a synthesis of the findings.

Included in this report are examples of councils producing an annual Quality of Life or Focus on report/surveys are available in this report as Case Studies.
