Two briefings in this series have already been published. Value for money in social care was published in June 2011 and Joining up health and social care: Value for money across the interface was published in December 2011. The remaining briefing will look at assessment and care management.
The final briefing will examine efficiency in assessment and care management in adult social care. It will be to explore the changes to assessment and care management being driven by personalisation. The briefing will include helpful case studies illustrating how some councils have already made changes to improve outcomes for service users or make efficiency savings.

Local Payment by Results (PbR)
'Payment by Results' is increasingly seen as an attractive way of commissioning public services. To achieve the benefits of local payment by results requires:
- careful design;
- a good understanding of how it works; and
- recognition of the challenges it brings.
In consultation with HM Treasury and the Cabinet Office we are developing an overview aimed at those considering using PbR to commission local services. It will provide a helpful introduction to the issues and guide users through the challenges in designing an effective PbR scheme.
