Chairman of the Audit Commission, Michael O'Higgins, said:
"I am delighted to hear that Sir Merrick Cockell has been named Chairman of the Local Government Association. In his two years as a Commissioner at the Audit Commission, Merrick has contributed a great deal to our organisation, including his vast knowledge of local government.
"While we regret that we will lose him as a Commissioner, we would like to congratulate Merrick on this significant appointment, following in the footsteps of some of local government's most respected politicians."
